Good news: Arsene Wenger Deliver latest positive injury news for Arsenal fans

Danny Welbeck will return to action for Arsenal months ahead of schedule, Arsene Wenger has revealed.

The England international had been expected to be out until at least 2017, possibly as late as April, after undergoing knee surgery following an injury picked up in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City in May.

However Wenger says his injury is healing well and expects the former Manchester United striker to return by Christmas.

‘He had an inflammation of his knee and they had to go in again to see if it is healing well or not,’ said the Arsenal manager.

‘If the healing was not good, he would have been out until April. But the news was excellent and he will be back around Christmas.

‘He had a second check, not a procedure, a check with a camera inside. That was the good news of last week, the only good news. That was very positive.

Leicester City v Arsenal Preview: team news and strong predicted Line up - Carzola to start

Arsenal will be facing Leicester City at the King Power stadium on Saturday, August 20.

Leicester City
Leicester City are the first reigning top-flight champions to lose their opening game since Arsenal in 1989. No defending champion has begun the following season with successive defeats since Aston Villa in 1981.

The Foxes have scored a league-high 11 penalties since the start of 2015-16.

Leicester have played four Premier League games without Robert Huth in their starting XI over the last year and have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of them.

Claudio Ranieri's next Premier League win will be his 100th in the competition.

Arsenal
Arsenal haven't lost their opening two league games since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93.

The Gunners conceded four goals at home in the league last weekend for the first time since May 2009, and only the third time in total.

Defeat by Liverpool ended Arsenal's 10-match unbeaten run.

Alexis Sanchez has scored four goals in his two previous league games at the King Power Stadium.

Wenger admit Arsenal will sign ‘experienced’ central defender following Per Mertesacker injury

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stepped up his search for a central defender after Per Mertesacker was ruled out for up to five months.

Germany international Mertesacker, 31, will miss the start of the Premier League season with a knee injury and Wenger wants to sign some cover with Arsenal facing a defensive shortage.

The Gunners are also set to be without Laurent Koscielny for their first game of the new season on August 14, after he was given an extended break following his exertions with France at Euro 2016, which leaves Gabriel and Calum Chambers as their only centre-back options.

Wenger said: “We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in.”

Arsenal injury news: Arsenal star Per Mertesacker facing five months out with knee injury

Arsenal are facing a defensive shortage ahead of the new season with Per Mertesacker poised to be a long-term absentee due to a knee injury.

Mertesacker has been left out of the club’s pre-season tour of America and losing the 31-year-old represents a serious setback for Arsene Wenger.

It leaves Arsenal with a problem for their first game of the season against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on August 14.

Laurent Koscielny is not back after Euro 2016 and Wenger is normally reluctant to rush players into action after a major tournament. Wenger likes to give players at least four weeks rest and Koscielny played for France in the Euro 2016 final on July 10.

But with Mertesacker sidelined and Gabriel and Calum Chambers the only alternatives at centre-back, Wenger may be forced to play Koscielny.

Wenger is expected to clarify the extent of Mertesacker’s injury at a press conference this evening.

Arsene Wenger has insisted that he will be “cautious” with Alexis Sanchez and has not yet decided whether to risk the forward in Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Thursday morning, Wenger said: “The doubt is that he has been out for a long time and [there is] the risk of a setback if you try to go too early.

“To be clear on all the tests is one thing, after he is clear on training is another thing, and after that the intensity of a big game which you can never repeat in a training session.

“You can make sure after a certain amount of time that the risk is minimal. I am cautious with him because we cannot afford a setback with him. A setback would mean a very long period out so we don’t want to take this gamble.

“The signs he has shown in training this week are positive.”

Wenger confirms bad news for Arsenal's Sanchez

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Alexis Sanchez will not be risked in Arsenal's FA Cup third round clash with Sunderland on Saturday.

The 27-year-old missed the entire festiv
e fixture list having suffered a hamstring injury in the 1-1 draw at Norwich in November.
Sanchez was expected to make his comeback for the win over title rivals Manchester City before Christmas but suffered a setback in his recovery.

"The bad news of the week is that Alexis is not quite ready," Arsene Wenger told arsenal.com.
"It is a precaution because of his hamstring, and it takes a few more days. He's not bad but he's not ready.

"The thinking is to give absolutely everything to qualify. We are the holders of the cup and I know as well by experience that it is very important that you get in the competition and that you have a successful third round. It's a tricky one, always, the third round."

Wenger is not ready to rush Sanchez back into his side with crucial league fixtures to come and a Champions League tie against the Chile international's former club Barcelona on the horizon.

“He is a guy who, once the basic fitness is there between the games, he wants to play
