Arsenal boss Arsene
Wenger has stepped up his search for a central defender after Per
Mertesacker was ruled out for up to five months.
Germany international Mertesacker, 31, will miss the
start of the Premier League season with a knee injury and Wenger wants to sign
some cover with Arsenal facing a defensive shortage.
The Gunners are also set to be without Laurent Koscielny
for their first game of the new season on August 14, after he was given an
extended break following his exertions with France at Euro 2016, which leaves
Gabriel and Calum Chambers as their only centre-back options.
Wenger said: “We have to look for an option to get a bit
more experience. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front
and we are looking to bring somebody in.”
