Arsenal need 87 points to win the Premier League, says Cech

The Czech Republic international insists they remain in the race to lift the title in May and has set his side a points target after their disappointing 0-0 draw with Southampton

Arsenal need 87 points to win the Premier League title, according to goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The Gunners slipped to fourth in the table on Tuesday after playing out a 0-0 draw with Southampton at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger’s men subsequently sit five points behind leaders Leicester City, but Cech believes Arsenal remain firmly in the race to lift the trophy in May, and has set his side a points target as they aim to end a drought that runs back to 2004.

“You need to look at the end and you need 86, 87 points to be sure and it does not matter which way you go to get those points,” he told reporters.

“It does not matter if you have to catch up at the end of the season, which is what we have to do. Every time you lose points you need to keep believing.

“The boring part is if you play for 0-0 you have no chance. When you create chance after chance on another day you might score six goals and it might be different.

“We need to get ready for Sunday and get those points back.”
