Arsenal are close to completing a deal to sign FC Basel
midfielder Mohamed Elneny with the combative player arriving at London after
clearing up his visa issues.
The 23-year-old is expected to sign a
four-and-a-half year deal with the Gunners, but endured a setback due to having
problems with a work permit.
However, now Elneny is cleared to complete the transfer,
he could well make the matchday squad for Sunday’s meeting with Stoke City.
With the likes of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla missing from the middle of
the park, the Egyptian international’s arrival comes at a perfect time.
He will inject the side with physicality and ruggedness
off the ball, but composure and ball retention on it.
With Arsenal top of the
Premier League, manager Arsene Wenger has sought out a key area in need of
strengthening to give the Gunners the best chance of remaining at the summit.
Arsenal’s midfield has been heavily depleted this season,
but Elneny will be an alternate option to the likes of Mathieu Flamini in the
deep-lying defensive role. Supporters have long pleaded with their manager to
sign combative influences in the middle of the park, and now their wishes have
been granted.
Could Elneny be the difference for Arsenal in the Premier
League title-race this season?
