Arsenal have confirmed the announcement of Per
Mertesacker as the club’s new captain.
The German moved to the Emirates in 2011 and has become a
key figure for the Gunners on and off the pitch.
Arsene Wenger has toiled over naming a new captain in
pre-season after the departure of Mikel Arteta.
Mertesacker is currently sidelined through injury and is
expected to be out for the next four months but Arsenal have confirmed in the
matchday programme for tomorrow’s game against Liverpool that the defender has
been appointed club skipper.
In Mertesacker’s absence, Wenger is keen to sign a new defender with Valencia centre-back Shkodran Mustafi hotly-tipped to move to north London.
The 24-year-old’s arrival would bring Mertesacker’s place
in the team into question but, nevertheless, the veteran has been giving the role
as club captain.
