Arsenal lengend Martin Keown has thrown his support behind the
possibility of Arsene Wenger choosing Petr Cech to be the next Arsenal captain.
The Czech Republic international has been a superb
performer for the Gunners since he joined from Chelsea in the summer and Keown
is not surprised to see him being considered.
Despite Cech only being into his first season at the
Emirates Stadium, Keown believes his leadership qualities and influence on the
team are more important than how long-serving he is in comparison to some of
his team-mates.
In a question-and-answer session on the Daily Mail, Keown said: ‘To be honest I don’t enjoy seeing
stories like that come out of the club, it’s obviously leaking from somewhere.
But in terms of appointing Cech, of course I can see the reasoning behind it.
‘Arsene Wenger likes a certain calmness and he can’t
afford for his captain to be a problem. He has to be a solid individual and a
first-choice, his position in the team can’t be in question.
‘Given that, I think Cech would be a good choice. He has
raised the bar in this Arsenal side because of his ability and his experience
as a winner – it rubs off on your team-mates when they see how winners prepare
for games.
‘And I don’t think it matters how long a person has been
at a club. Just because you’re a long-serving player doesn’t necessarily make
you captain material. If somebody comes in, impresses and makes a contribution
on and off the pitch then it actually becomes quite an easy decision.’
